Foxglove will continue challenging Big Tech's unchecked power across Europe. It will expose the environmental cost of AI and data centres, support newsrooms in challenging Google's AI Overviews for scraping content without consent, and urge competition regulators to stop Big Tech dominating generative AI.
It will also challenge governments adding AI to public services without safeguards, and back tech workers, including 900+ Amazon workers in a union-busting case and social media content moderators seeking fairer conditions.
Foxglove focused on challenging the concentrated power of big tech monopolies with their partners. With this grant, they continued to investigate, uncover and challenge the use problematic AI and algorithmic decision making by governments in the UK and the EU.
Foxglove backed Amazon.com workers in the UK and Germany, getting their stories into the press and challenging algorithmic micromanagement that harms their health. It filed a world-first constitutional challenge in Kenya for Facebook content moderator and whistle-blower Daniel Motaung, and resisted Facebook's threat of criminal contempt with help from a coalition of 80 groups. It also supported disabled people in challenging a secretive UK algorithm that unfairly flags them for benefits fraud.
