Health Action International (HAI) is an independent non-profit organisation. It conducts research and advocacy to advance policies that enable access to safe, effective, affordable and quality-assured medicines and rational medicine use for everyone, everywhere. HAI focuses on creating long-lasting changes to government and industry policies and practices.
With this grant, Health Action International pushed for rules on AI in healthcare that protect patients' rights, including in EU laws and in Dutch standard-setting, and used evidence to challenge overly hopeful claims about AI.
In the Netherlands, it called for AI in elderly care to put patients first and to be used only under strong conditions. It also worked with groups and experts across the EU to grow its network and make its campaigning stronger.
HAI became a trusted expert on AI and health and shared their experise with civil society and policymakers. HAI developed a report and advocacy materials on the impact of the EU AI Act on AI used in healthcare, and worked to debunk MedTech industry led narratives aiming to exempt health tech from regulation, which especially impacts vulnerable people. It led advocacy efforts for classification of more health related Artificial Intelligence (AI) as high-risk under the Act.
